how good is the nikkor 18-105 3.5-5.6 DX lens?
Posted by admin | Under Nikon D90 DX Saturday Nov 28, 2009I was looking at a nikon d90 and the sales guy said it was an exellent quality $600 lens. How accurate are his comments? I mean, I know its not the fastest lens available, but in terms of optical image quaility..how does it stand up?? Anything better in this price range which will give a comparable zoom?
Also, can this lens be used on a full frame camera like the d700??
Okay, first of all, listening to what that guy said, I wouldn’t shop there. All they care about is selling you the thing, not anything else. The 18-105mm costs almost half the price of what that guy mentioned. I use the 18-105mm and it works great for my typical day-to-day shots. It’s optically better than the similar 18-135, giving better performance for vignetting control, and implementing a VR system. For something more serious, I’d grab a prime lens over a zoom any day.
Yes, the lens can be used on the D700, but only in "dx crop" mode. Since the 18-105 is a dx lens, it only covers a dx image circle. When used on the D700, the camera will only be using the center of the imaging chip to record the image.
Well for starters, the 18-105 isn’t a $600 lens (at least not in US Dollars). By itself it’s only $400 MSRP. Now it’s far from the sharpest or best corrected lens in catalog, but it’s not bad considering the price and inclusion of Vibration Reduction. The 18-135mm is cheaper, optically similar, and gives you an extra 30mm on the telephoto, but it doesn’t include VR.
Lenses with DX in their name are only designed for use with crop frame sensors. They can be mounted on a D700, but it would mean cropping out part of the image (which the camera can at least do automatically).

It is a good zoom lens and can use with Nikon D700 but the price is $360 not $600 like sales guy said .
