Canon 40d or Nikon d90 or Nikon d300?
Posted by admin | Under Nikon D90 DX Monday Jun 29, 2009I am using the canon 40d right now with the kit lens. But recently my friend gave me a bunch of Nikon lenses.
AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G
AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G
AF Zoom-NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5D IF-ED
AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED
AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED
Should I sell my Canon 40d with kit lens only and get a Nikon body?
If so, which one should I get from the Nikon? Should I get the Nikon d90 or the Nikon d300?
Thanks
If you sufficient budget than go to D300, It is best deal and great Camera.
Well you have a few nice lenses there, the 35mm, 50mm, and 17-55mm. The other two are just so so. If you like Nikon I would say its worth it. The D300 is way better than the D90, unless you need the video feature of the D90 for some reason.

You have a very nice friend. Of the five lenses listed, three are valuable and desirable. The 35m 1.8, 50mm 1.4 and 17-55mm 2.8.
Can you afford to buy the Nikon to try the lenses out? If you can hold onto the Canon, keep it for awhile. Try Nikon, you might like it, but I'd hold off on selling the Canon in case you don't like it for whatever reason.
Next, it's down to the d90 and d300. I'd pick the 300, but if video is something you might want to play with the d90 is a interesting choice.
If there's a gun to my head, and I have to choose the Canon 40d with a kit lens or a D300 with any one of the lenses listed, I'd go d300.

Normally I would not recommend switching brands as it can get quite expensive when you have to replace lenses but under your circumstances I would say go for it. The D300 would be the best choice as it is most similar in build quality and feel to the 40D. The D90 is basically the same thing as the D80 but it shoots video as well. Go to a camera store and hold both. See which one you prefer. If you are an experienced user who knows and uses the manual controls you will prefer the D300. If you shoot mostly in the auto modes you might as well get the D90 and save your self a few bucks. Image quality will be basically the same.

I am a happy 40D user but if I happened to come across a collection of lenses like this I would be tempted to swap. The 35mm 1.8 alone is worth about £250 is your friend crazy?.
Anyway, if I was you I would do one of two things..
1) Sell all the lenses on eBay and buy some quality lenses for the 40D (70-200mm F/2.8 L IS for example).
or 2) Sell the 40D and kit lens and buy a Nikon body
I personally would go with 1 because I already have a lens collection with my 40D and as such I'm kind of married to the system. If I were YOU though I would swap in a heartbeat. Those are very nice lenses BUT I would have to make sure that they are all compatible with the bodies you mentioned.
As for the bodies, they are both fine but the D300 would be my personal choice, a wonderful camera which beats the 40D and D90 hands down.
You are one lucky b****d to have this choice, I'm jealous.

I would switch to Nikon. Lenses are really what makes your camera. The more lenses you have the more choices you have so it would be wise to invest in a camera that can utilize those lenses. The D300 is a better, more professional Camera and, if you can afford it, I would suggest that for photography. However the Nikon D90 has a video feature that you might want to consider. So If you want to get into serious professional photography then I would suggest the D300. But if you want to use the camera for family vacations and things like that then I would suggest the D90.

DAMN that's a nice friend.
Personally, I can't stand the feel of Nikons and would prefer to sell those lenses to buy some for my Canon. However, if you have no such reservation I'd say definitely switch. Your 40D still has most of its value so it's a good time to sell it now before the 60D comes out. If you need to make up the difference for a D300 or D90 you could consider selling one of those lenses and you'll still come out on top.

DAYUMMM…. I wish I had a friend like that.
You can either keep the Canon body and sell those lens, or get a Nikon body and sell the Canon. The Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8 costs more than $1000 USD new, the 50mm f/1.4G around $460, 35mm f/1.8 at $200, 18-135mm about $320, not sure about the 18-35. That's more than $2000 worth of lens =O!
With all those excellent lens, especially the 35mm, 50mm, and 17-55mm, if I were you (I really wish I was), I would get a Nikon body. The Nikon D90 is highly recommended, here it is body-only: http://www.adorama.com/INKD90.html
You can also consider the D300, but it offers no advantages in terms of image quality, just convenience and better build quality. I'm thinking the D700 is a little too expensive, and besides, its FX sensor will leave both the 35mm and the 18-135 not so useful.
