when purchasing the nikon d90 are there any must have accessories that you must have?

Certainly a good UV filter to protect the front element of the lens would be a good start and a few 4 gb SDHC cards (under $10 each when on sale) Maybe a generic backpack to carry it around in, so your bag does no scream, "I have a nice camera inside me … steal me"

After that you can buy a nice polarizing filter if you like shooting landscapes and maybe a battery grip and second battery to assure continued shooting when out and about for a long time.

And of course a second lens later once you determine if you need a super wide angle (10-24 mm or 12-24 mm) or a long lens like a 70-300 mm or prime 300 mm lens. That will come later, once you define the subjects you tend to shoot, but something to think about as you save for your next lens.

The simple kit with a great lens is priced at about 1150.00…that includes the 18-105mm VR lens, body, battery, and charger. Add to that a UV filter (lens protector) and a carrying case, perhaps an extra battery and certainly a 16G card and you are ready to go. You will have very little use for a lens longer than the 105mm max zoom of the kit lens (equivalent to a 180mm telephoto on a 35mm camera). If that time comes, purchase another lens then, and only then! You can put together the entire package you really need for about 1250.00 plus tax.
