Bought it June 18 for $640 all together with the accessories. I split the price with my parents for an early birthday present.

it also protects the lens from scratches and blemishes. And, if your lens breaks, but you filter is on, only the filter will break. I saved my $200 55-200mm lens that way.

Norm Kit= (THE) 18-55 KIT, 55-200 VR, 50mm F/1.8D (Only it CAN’T focus on the D40 so just get the NEW F/1.4 SWM. Unless you want to manually focus.

If you plan on getting more specialized lenses be prepared to walk around with thousands of dollars worth of gear in your bag. Enjoy!
Not sure you needed a multicoated filter for the kit lens but if you only paid for half of it I guess it’s not so bad. You don’t need an extra battery. I can get 800-1000 exposure on one charge with my D80. If you want to get a VR lens don’t get the 18-55VR because the VR hardly helps at such a wide angle(18mm). This is a VERY expensive hobby. I would know
