I just edited some files together that had been on my harddrive since a few months, and which I never used. I filmed almost all of them with old nikon lenses from the 1980s

Few months ago, i bought a Nikon D90 with 18-105mm lens. Now, it is the time for me to buy another lens. I want lenses for low light, and wide aperture. So, i am planning to buy Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D AF Lens. On the other hand, i am also looking for a telephoto lens. I came across Tamron 70-300mm F4/5.6 DI LD Macro (Nikon AF).
Are these two lenses compatible with Nikon D90?
Is there any other lens would you recommend me to buy….Suggestions are welcomed
Many thanks,
Pankaj
Dear Experts,
Few months ago, i bought a Nikon D90 with 18-105mm lens. Now, it is the time for me to buy another lens. I want lenses for low light, and wide aperture. So, i am planning to buy Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D AF Lens. On the other hand, i am also looking for a telephoto lens. I came across Tamron 70-300mm F4/5.6 DI LD Macro (Nikon AF).
i also came across Nikon 70-300mm F4.5-5.6D ED AF Zoom Lens. is this lens any good? i am unable to find more details on this lens.
Are these two lenses compatible with Nikon D90?
Is there any other lens would you recommend me to buy….Suggestions are welcomed
Many thanks,
Pankaj
I also came across Nikon 70-300mm F4.5-5.6D ED AF Zoom Lens. is this lens any good to buy? as there is not much information about it on internet.
The Nikkor lens is of course.
While the Tamron may be compatible, it is not compliant.
Here is why:
"Nikon often includes secret features in cameras and in lenses to make them compatible with the next five years or so of secretly planned technology.
For instance, the 1988 F4 is completely compatible with AF-I and AF-S lenses which didn’t appear until 1992 and 1998.
Nikon AI lenses in 1977 already had secret lugs on the back which couple lens information to cameras for Matrix metering, not introduced until the FA of 1983.
Zoom AF lenses, ever since they were introduced in 1986, have always had focal length encoders which insert data into today’s digital cameras’ EXIF data.
AF lenses of today … still have mechanical lugs for backwards compatibility with the matrix meter of the 1983 FA, and manual focus lenses still have prongs for coupling to the 1959 (Nikon) F. — KR
If I really wanted a 70-300 mm lens, I would save my pennies until I could budget for the Nikkor 70-300 mm VR
My rule is just buy a lens once and keep it for decades … very few generic lenses last 40 or 50 years.

I currently own a Canon Digital Rebel. It was one of the first models that came out that I bought around the fall of ‘04.
I am looking at getting a NikonD90 and am wondering if my zoom lens from my Canon will work with the Nikon??
Nope, afraid not. your limited to brands proprietary lens… meaning – Sony = Sony lens, Nikon = Nikkor / Nikon lens, and Canon = Canon lens… etc.
but same brand SLR lens may sometimes be used with the DSLR.
NOTE: you are buying the DSLR because you prefer the BRAND, it’s numerous set of features, the variety of lens available, and whether the auto-focus motor is integrated in the DSLR body or in the lens.
There are many many brands to choose from. Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus

Which lenses would you recommend for the Nikon D90? I’m an amateur, mainly doing Senior pictures, families, portraits, and small weddings. I’d really like to purchase the camera and 2 lenses for under $1800 if possible. Also, where would you recommend purchasing? I was going to go to Best Buy because I’m fearful of getting screwed online but I’m open to buying online if you’ve had good experiences. Thank you in advance!
80-200mm VR & 50mm f/1.8 (or 50mm 1.4 G or D)?
80-105mm VR & 70-300mm VR?
Other suggestions? Won’t be buying much after this for awhile so need something that will last awhile for my purposes.
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH! VERY HELPFUL! With your input it looks like I’m going to go with the Nikon 80-200mm VR lens and the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF lenses with a Nikon D90 for now. I think this will be a good start. I’m also leaning toward eventually getting the SB 600 flash. Think this flash will work okay for my purposes or would I need to save up for the SB 800? Thanks again to you all!
For $1800 budget I would suggest get Nikon D90 with Nikon 18-200mm VR LEns which is a great all around lens for both wide, zoom and Ken Rockwell calling it "the world’s best portrait lens"

I did a Nikon D90 test. I set the Picture control to Portrait. I set the camera to +5 on sharpness, +1 on contrast, +1 on saturation and I left the rest on 0. You can also do -1 on contrast if you have lots of light.
