Nikon D90 good for Headhots and portraits?

Well from the first previous awnser i found the Canon 50d….what lens would be good with that if i just bought the bodY?

the 50mm f1.8 is a cheap high quality portrait lens on a D90 or a 50D (look at the 550D instead, better chip, better low light, excellent video mode, similar cost)

Its worth getting the kit lens and the 50mm f1.8, the kit lens is pretty versatile and will certainly get you going until you invest in something better. The 50mm is so inexpensive, and so well suited for portraiture on a cropped sensor camera, that it really is a no brainer.

Difference between Nikon D90 and Cannon EOS450D?

I am planning to take a professional DSLR and i searched a lot, because i need best images with best depth, color and everything. I cannot afford a high end camera. finally i found these two and now the problem is this two is same in price. i want to know the difference between these two. Not only the tec specification difference, i need a perfect answer from a PROFESSIONAL Photographer who used both two. Professional means not only wedding photos, but also ad shoot, nature shoot, indoor, outdoor, low light, opposite light…. everything…Also 1 more thing, i seen so many people using Nikon, but only rare in Cannon. Which 1 is highly professional even though both are considering as Pro. Also i need the drawbacks of these cameras if any. (Here in the store i wil get Nikon D90 Digital SLR Camera+18-105mm and Canon EOS450D Digital SLR Camera + 18-200mm Lens. But nikon lens is not VR and Cannon is not IS)

Sorry, I’m not a professional like you are asking, but I have an answer for you.

First – you are comparing two different brands. Choose one and stick to it. Not just for particular camera, but also for all the accessories and add-ons, ease of use and how intuitive it is to you. Once you bought into the system, there’s not going to be an easy switch for you. Most photographers stick to one for a lifetime. The good news is – both are great brands. It’s only a matter of preference to which you want to turn.

Now – branding aside, you are comparing two cameras from different leagues. Neither is a professional camera contrary to what you’ve been told. Canon (spelled with 1 "n") 450D is an entry level camera, while Nikon D90 is a mid-range semi-pro or what’s often referred to as "bridge" camera. The fair comparison would have been to either compare Canon 450D to Nikon D5000 in entry level market or to compare Nikon D90 to Canon 50D in bridge camera market.

You are either being under-charged for D90 or over-charged for 450D, or it’s the more expensive lens that goes with Canon that makes a difference.

Talking of which – a lens choice is far more important than the camera choice. Because the camera will only shoot an image as good as a lens will project on its matrix. Consider a cheaper body with greater lens for the best result! It will do better than an expensive higher level body with a cheap lens. Neither lens that you point out is going to be a choice of professional photographer on assignment. They prefer faster smaller zoom range or prime lenses for specific tasks.

Last but not least – learn the photography! Read books, or better yet attend a class or two. Because no great camera and/or lens will get you the results without your own skillful use of them. Camera gear is just a tool in your hands. But 80% of your success as a photographer is in your skill. Just like having a professional cookware set will not make you a celebrity chef – having a professional photo gear won’t make you a photographer. You need to know the trade to work in a field!
