Can older SLR lenses be used with a Nikon D90?

Saturday Nov 28, 2009

I have older auto focus lenses from my film Nikon SLR which I no longer use (model N70). I am wondering if my old lenses will work with a new Nikon D90. Thanks.

Yes.

The only restrictions are on the entry level DSLR’s like the D40(x) and D60. You have to use the AF-S and AF-I lenses made since 1992 with them.

Here is a list of all the lenses:

when purchasing the nikon d90 are there any must have accessories that you must have?

Saturday Nov 28, 2009

Certainly a good UV filter to protect the front element of the lens would be a good start and a few 4 gb SDHC cards (under $10 each when on sale) Maybe a generic backpack to carry it around in, so your bag does no scream, "I have a nice camera inside me … steal me"

After that you can buy a nice polarizing filter if you like shooting landscapes and maybe a battery grip and second battery to assure continued shooting when out and about for a long time.

And of course a second lens later once you determine if you need a super wide angle (10-24 mm or 12-24 mm) or a long lens like a 70-300 mm or prime 300 mm lens. That will come later, once you define the subjects you tend to shoot, but something to think about as you save for your next lens.

Will my Nikon F65 lenses mount on a Nikon digital SLR body?

Saturday Nov 28, 2009

Thinking about making the upgrade from manual SLR (Nikon F65, much loved) to a digital SLR (considering the Nikon D90). My question is, will my lenses that mount on my F65 be usable on a D90 (or if not, any other digital SLR)?
Just found out this camera is known as a N65 in the USA. Same thing, different name.

Actually, your N65 (F65) is an automatic focus film camera, not a manual SLR. I actually had a digital SLR based on the older N60 film camera, so I know a bit about the N65 as well as the D90.

If you have lenses that mount and meter on the N65, they will in fact mount and meter on the D90. If they autofocus on the N65, they will autofocus on the D90.

You can also use those lenses on the older Nikon D80 (the D90 is better), as well as the Nikon D300, D700, D2-series, D3 and D3x, and the discontinued Nikon D50, D70, D70s, D200, and D100. They will mount, meter, and if they are AF lenses, will autofocus.

The lenses should mount and meter on the D40, D40x, and D60, but may not autofocus unless they are AF-S or Sigma HSM lenses with the built-in motor.

If for some reason you have very old AI lenses, which have the F-mount, they will mount and manually focus, but will only properly meter on the D3, D3x, D2-series, D200, D700 and D300, as those cameras have settings for AI lenses.

Can anyone recommend a camera than is similar to Nikon D90 or any camera that take good pictures for my subjec?

Saturday Nov 28, 2009

I am overwhelmed by the range of DSLR available, i Don’t know whch one to get. I like to take landscape/ outdoor and people as my subject. I would really like a NIKON D90 but it is a bit pricey for me. Can anyone recommend a camera than is similar to Nikon D90 or any camera that take good pictures for my subject. My price range is $1000 to $1300.

An entry level DSLR in either Nikon or Canon will do all that you need.
Try Nikon D5000 or Canon 500D.
They both lead the way as far as quality goes so really it just comes down to personel preference or.. indeed who gives you the best price!
Good luck.

how good is the nikkor 18-105 3.5-5.6 DX lens?

Saturday Nov 28, 2009

I was looking at a nikon d90 and the sales guy said it was an exellent quality $600 lens. How accurate are his comments? I mean, I know its not the fastest lens available, but in terms of optical image quaility..how does it stand up?? Anything better in this price range which will give a comparable zoom?

Also, can this lens be used on a full frame camera like the d700??

Okay, first of all, listening to what that guy said, I wouldn’t shop there. All they care about is selling you the thing, not anything else. The 18-105mm costs almost half the price of what that guy mentioned. I use the 18-105mm and it works great for my typical day-to-day shots. It’s optically better than the similar 18-135, giving better performance for vignetting control, and implementing a VR system. For something more serious, I’d grab a prime lens over a zoom any day.

Yes, the lens can be used on the D700, but only in "dx crop" mode. Since the 18-105 is a dx lens, it only covers a dx image circle. When used on the D700, the camera will only be using the center of the imaging chip to record the image.
